We’re very proud of the work we do in communities all across the United States. Our customers and employees alike tell us every day about the large and small successes they see, and we’d like you to hear some of their comments.
“Resident-centered care is a new approach in delivering care in the long-term care world. Along with meeting the needs for diagnosis, care and treatment, we are also focusing on the needs for quality of life -- meeting the emotional needs, spiritual needs, and ‘food for the soul’ of our residents.” -Dawn Brostoski, Executive Director
“When resident-centered care was introduced here at Summit, the feeling of delight came into my heart. When I think of home life, being able to wake up when you want to wake up, being able to eat what you want to eat ... I had always thought that’s how it should be.” -Pat Girmen, CNA, Community Coordinator
“Our residents are so much more their individual selves now. In our standard levels of care, we were very good at looking at their needs for diagnosis, medications and treatments. But once we empowered our residents to understand that they as individuals can express their needs and requests, we have found that they have flourished tremendously. Their quality of life is much improved.” -Dawn Brostoski, Executive Director
“The biggest difference I’ve seen is how the residents are relaxed. They can go anywhere they want. Years ago it was like working in a factory -- get them up, washed, dressed, fed, changed, and back to bed. And now, it’s a home! What really hit me hard was when one resident said to me, “Would you be my adopted sister?” And that, you know, that’s what it’s all about.” -Sonya Templeton, LPN, Charge Nurse
“The difference in the residents is tremendous. They would stay in their rooms. They wouldn’t come out. Since resident-centered care has come here, it’s not like that anymore. Everybody knows everyone. Family members get involved. They come in and out, even attend activities.” -Pat Girmen, CNA, Community Coordinator
“The biggest surprise of all, I think, is that we can learn valuable lessons from our elders. We have always -- prior to this -- looked at what their needs are, and what we can give to them. Now we’re learning that they can give so much back to us, that they enrich our lives. We’re much happier people.” -Dawn Brostoski, Executive Director
“I really had no intention of coming here, but my son kept telling me how nice it is. ‘Mom, you’ll have your own room, you could do what you want and everything.’ So he brought me here one day to show me, and when I saw it, I liked it. So I came here, and I’m satisfied, I really am. I told all my sisters and my friends, and when they came and saw my room they said, ‘Wonderful! Save us a place!’ Even my sister in Vermont came to see me, and said, ‘You don’t know how relaxed I feel, knowing where you are.’ ” -Dolores Krynick, resident
“My job has changed now because it’s not a job. I enjoy coming here to be in my home. I do resident care, but it’s to their timing and when they want it. I love it. I wouldn’t change anything.” -Pat Girmen, CNA, Community Coordinator |
